■ Abstract:
“The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it.” – Mark Weiser
The omnipresence of artificial intelligence (AI) and internet-of-things (IoT) has changed how we look at the world. ‘Smart objects’ or ‘Autonomous devices’ are expected to achieve ambient intelligence by having the autonomy to conduct statistical inference or predictive analysis for making decisions concerning users' comfort.
However, central entities such as a cloud server have monopolized the intelligence for the last decades. Considering that recent smart objects have enough power to make their own decisions and provide personalized support in the proximity of a user, it is necessary to democratize and effectively coordinate the intelligence by making smart objects collaborate to enhance situation awareness and support users better.
In light of this requirement, my research concentrates on (1) enabling heterogeneous smart objects to autonomously collaborate to maximize users' comfort in a smart space. (2) To understand the users' behavioral patterns and needs that the smart objects should support, machine learning models have been devised and applied to the multi-modal data collected from online social media (i.e., image and text) and the smart/urban spaces (i.e., multivariate time series). Furthermore, (3) a trust management scheme of IoT devices has been devised to prevent interactions with compromised devices in a public edge environment, concerning IoT security and privacy.
■ Bio:
Heesuk is a Postdoctoral Associate at the MIT AgeLab with expertise in distributed systems and applied AI. His research focus is enabling heterogeneous distributed systems such as the Internet of Things to autonomously perceive surroundings, think, and collaborate together in order to make our lives more efficient and convenient. Currently, he is participating in the C3 Connected Home Logistics Consortium project, with his research focusing on prototyping smart home services and evaluating the acceptance of smart home technologies by different demographics. He is also collaborating with IBM AI on Neuroscience-inspired Artificial Intelligence.
Heesuk Son holds a PhD and a BS in Computer Science, both from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
He is the author of over thirty technical and literary publications and eight issued patents. He has led and/or participated in ten research projects sponsored by national agencies, industry, and a multi-party consortium.
